Charlotte were pressed for timebecause of the sheer volume of houses they were building. Many corners were cut
and over time many wildlife problems have plagued homeowners. There have been
some gaps that were big enough for a raccoon to get in the attic. Many roofs
were not flashed properly and over time wood fascia boards would rot making
perfect entry points for wildlife animals such as squirrels, bats, birds,
raccoons, flying squirrels and opossums. Recently during the economic many
homes were built in 2007 and sat vacant for years before anybody ever moved in.
Many upscale neighborhoods were built in heavily wooded areas that builders
were unable to sell because of the real estate crash in Charlotte. The houses
essentially became part of the habitat for wildlife. There were several cases
where the new homeowner bought a brand new house that sat vacant and within
days they were hearing noises in the attic. Many pest control companies saw a
spike in wildlife removal for these vacant houses and some cases there were
flying squirrel infestations.

Squirrels Getting in Construction Gap
While
doing a squirrel removal job in Charlotte North Carolina I was astonished to
find such a large squirrel infestation in the attic space of a home in the
Ballantyne area of Charlotte NC. The reason for such a large squirrel
infestation was a construction gap all the way around the perimeter of the
roofline. All the squirrels had to do
was get into the gutters and they had complete access to the attic space and
found themselves a nice winter home. The only thing blocking the squirrels
getting in the attic was just the shingles. There were some areas where
squirrels getting in above the garage and once the poked their furry little
heads in the gap they had access into the attic loft areas. When dealing with a
construction gap of this magnitude, it makes it nearly impossible to trap the
squirrels without some exclusion work.
Some squirrel removal experts will use something called drip edge thatwill cover the gap. Another method is using galvanized steel flashing and using
a bend and cut machine to custom cut the metal so it covers gap. The bend and
cut machine will give the metal a lip so it slides underneath the shingles and
then attached to the fascia board with preferably screws. Many people have the
misconception that squirrels just burrow right into your house but most of the
time this is not the case. If a squirrel can see into your attic then it will
begin chewing to get in. If the drip edge is properly installed and the
squirrel has no way of seeing into your attic he is just going to move on to
the next house on the street. The construction gap was located where the
plywood and the fascia boards do not meet flush right above the gutters. This
type of problem is common in the Carolinas especially the Piedmont Charlotte NCarea. Back in 1995 when many builders in

Squirrel Inspection
The most important aspect of
getting rid of squirrels in the attic is to first do a thorough attic
inspection. While performing an attic inspection for squirrels such as grey
squirrels, flying squirrels or red squirrels, you want to look for gaps along
the soffit vents and gable vents to locate any possible squirrel entry points.
Other areas that squirrels might enter are from the roof. These entry points
could be attic fans; attic vents, ridge vents, bathroom vents and any type of
pipe that could give access to squirrels into the attic. Once you have located
a gap that the squirrels are getting into the attic, it is important not to
stop your attic inspection there. In many cases there are secondary entry
points, and in severe squirrel attic infestations, there could multiple entrypoints.
During the inspection process if you are not a wildlife professional, you want to look for any type of squirrel droppings, squirrel hair; squirrel
nesting material and any chewed wires will be leading indicators of a squirrel
infestation in the attic. Grey Squirrel dropping can be located in areas called
latrines, which are areas that squirrels designate as the area the use the
restroom. The droppings are much bigger than mouse dropping and vary in shapes
and sizes. They are the size of a pea and are also round like a pea with a dark
brown color. If you find evidence of these droppings it is important to get a
sample and put it in a zip lock baggy to be identified by a squirrel removal
specialist. It might also be helpful to use the Google Images Tab and search for
gray squirrel droppings or grey squirrel scat. An integral part of a good
wildlife inspection is to look for any animal hairs which could help identify
if you are looking for a Norway Roof Rat, house mouse, flying squirrel, raccoon, opossum or grey squirrel.
A gray squirrel hair is wavy and has white, tan, grey and block patterns in it. They usually are approximately an inch long
and can be found at entry points and in squirrel nests. Not only are squirrels
in the attic annoying to homeowners but the biggest problem is that squirrels
living in an attic are a safety issue. It has been estimated that 40 percent of
unknown attic electrical fires are from rodents, which most likely would be the
grey squirrel because of their destructive habits.

Live humane squirrel trapping is very important in dealing with
wildlife removal of grey squirrels in North Carolina. Many people
think that if they get squirrels in the attic, that all you need to do
is run to one of the Charlotte Home Depot or Lowe’s Hardware; buy a
live squirrel trap and just set it up near the entry point with some
peanut butter in it. In some rare cases this will work, but if you
have a squirrel infestation, the best thing is to call wildlife
professionals. Homeowners that have never dealt with an issue might
even think to contact the Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Control or call
the Charlotte Humane Society off of Remount Road. Once you have
contacted a damage control agent, it is important to verify that they
have extensive knowledge of the grey squirrel and the best squirrel
removal method. Each squirrel control company has different ways of
getting rid of squirrels, whether using one way doors, live traps or
body grip traps. Most companies should offer live humane trapping of
squirrels. This method of trapping and removing squirrels requires
experience in dealing with animal removal.
Today I had 3 calls with flying squirrels running around peoples houses and 2 bats flying around. I picked up 2 opossums in cages. he customer wanted to get rid of the skunks and the opossums were denning up with the skunks. Opossums will often times nestle right in with the skunks and they do get sprayed from time to time. We blocked the hole with a board so they could get out but not in. The customer was concerned we
were taking animals that were not living under the shed and just passing by. I had told him if the board was pushed out then we would know that there were more living in there. Solving human animal conflicts is not about taking as many animals as you can, it is about solving their problem. If you trap with getting paid as much as you can without any regard for the customer then that isnt fair to the customer. I like to treat people the way I want to be treated.
today I had to travel 153 miles to do a follow up on a house. It was a vacant summer home that was infested with flying squirrels. When I first did the inspection There were flying squirrels running all over the place, in the attic, the basement and the main floors of the house. It was in a remote location too. Being in a remote location also meant the flying squirrels would try even harder than normal to get back in because
they had no other place to go. Some of the areas that needed work had to be done using a mirror and extensions on all of my tools to reach the area. The exclusion tube I took down today was at the top of the house over the main entry way. The flying squirrels had not gotten back in and now the two year waiting period begins. If they get back in I will get them back out again and start the two year waiting period over again from the very beginning. I know that very few wildlife operators will put a warrantee like
that on their work and I know of no operators personally except me that cover their work like this
